Diese Dokumentation ist das Ergebnis einer über 20-jährigen Forschungsarbeit. Sie stellt die Hubschrauber- und Tragschrauberentwicklung in Deutschland zwischen 1930 und 1945 umfassend vor und würdigt eine lange und zu Unrecht vernachlässigte Ära beträchtlicher luftfahrttechnischer Fortschritte: Allzu oft wurden die deutschen erfolge auf diesem gebiet von den Fortschritten in der Entwicklung der so genannten Wunderwaffen überschattet. Denn als der Zweite Weltkrieg zu Ende ging, waren die deutschen Konstrukteure – trotz minimaler Finanzierung, nur halbherziger offizieller Unterstützung und bitterer Rivalitäten zwischen den Waffengattungen – in der Entwicklung von Drehflüglern ihren Kollegen in alle anderen Ländern technologisch deutlich voraus.
Steve Coates hat lange nachgeforscht und schließlich die Geschichte der Entwicklung und der Verwendung deutscher Hubschrauber von den Vorkriegsjahren bis zum anschließenden Einsatz in der Luftwaffe zur Unterstützung von Gebirgstruppen und Unterseebooten neu geschrieben.
Mit Hilfe von über 500 Abbildungen, von denen die meisten bisher noch nie veröffentlich wurden, gelang ihm eine detaillierte Analyse bahnbrechender Hubschrauber sowie einiger noch ,,exotischerer" Projekte und Varianten, die sich in Planung befanden.
,,Deutsche Hubschrauber 1930-1945" kann als eine der ausführlichsten Dokumentationen bezeichnet werden, die jemals zu diesem Thema veröffentlich wurden.

Fazit:
Ein wirklich hochinteressantes Buch. Für Modellbauer, die Hubschrauber aus der Zeit bauen wollen, eine Fundgrube. Man darf aber keinen Walk-Around-Bildband erwarten.
Nicht gerade ein preisgünstiges Buch. Ich hatte Glück und konnte ein preisreduziertes Mängelexemplar erwerben, dessen einzige Mängel eine angestoßene Umschlagecke und der Mängelexemplar-Stempel waren. Ich habe den Kauf für knapp 30 Euro nicht bereut.
